RHYTHM IN COLOUR
EXHIBITION AT GALLERY 8 VARNA
31st March - 15 April 2022
RHYTHM in COLOUR exhibits fourteen paintings of Alexander Kaprichev’s, from his ‘Music Cycle’, dating from the 1990s. Passionate lover of music – predominantly classical, jazz and the new music of the 20th century, Alexander found inspiration in it and that translated itself into a spontaneous artistic drive resulting in considerable number of paintings from that period.
This is well summarised by prof. Chavdar Popov, in the following way:
“….During the decade 1986-1996, Alexander Kaprichev continued to develop his artistic abstract compositions - oils, watercolours, drawings, as well as various other works in mixed media on paper. The cycle “Music” (1989-1996) falls into that category, and affirms Kaprichev’s unfailing and deep interest in music, philosophy and aesthetics. Despite his affinity to literature, and poetry in particular, he strove to reduce to a minimum the literary element in his creative work, that is the plot, the narrative. Consequently, among many other opuses, the cycle ‘Untitled’ was created.
‘Untitled’ strikes with its distinct cold, grey-bluish colours. One has the perception that the lightened colour range was the result of the artist’s conscious and deliberate intention rather than that of his intuitive and spontaneous artistic impulse. The presence of Cubism and Futurism are apparent. Namely, the basic elements and the objects’ formal motifs are created by peculiar plastic prisms and facets, recalling the discoveries of analytical Cubism. The decomposition of the forms in space and their recomposition on the principle of pure architectonics, the plastic, but not the similar visual logic, became part of the artist’s poetic statement.
The line frequently turns into a peculiar seismograph, a kind of nerve-gram which reflects and expresses the artist’s state of mind, while the figure, where present, is depicted as a plastic and colour construction, as a space expression; not however, in line with traditional psychology. In this respect, Alexander Kaprichev’s creative work reminds us of Henry Matisse’s words in so that to him the expression of a painting is instilled not in the facial expression, or in the effect of a gesture, but in the very organization of the composition itself, in the combination of colours, in the rhythm of lines and planes….”.
“Alexander, Sasho for short, or Capry (as his close-ones and friends called him), possessed an acute sensitivity to colours, so much so that I believe he could hear them. To appreciate best his art, stand close to any of the paintings, don’t try to analyse them. As you let your eye and mind float with ease in the rhythms of colour that respond to music, you become a participant in a unique spiritual experience. And that is how, I am certain, Alexander Kaprichev would have wished you to feel his artwork.”(MK)
In the freshness of spring, we hope the RHYTHM in COLOUR exhibition will bring in an air of hope to enjoy amidst the unpredictable nature of 2022.
